Coach John Vickers came to Mississippi Delta Junior College in 1968 and for the next 30 years coached men’s basketball for the Trojans. In addition, he coached tennis for a number of years. He was also part of the Trojan’s football coaching staff during the 1968 and 1969 seasons. He was named as part of the Coaching Staff of the Year in Mississippi in 1968.

It was on the basketball court that the former Trojan and William Cary standout made his mark, winning a State Championship in 1977 and compiling a 21-6 record. This was the first State Title for the Trojans since 1940. His teams were the North Division Champions in 1971 and the North Runner-up in 1974 with an 18-7 record.

John received a scholarship to Delta State College as a freshman out of Belzoni but transferred to SJC to play his freshman year in 1958-59, earning All-State honors and averaging 19.6 points per game. He then played for one year at Nicholls State before finishing his career at William Cary averaging 22.5 points per game. While at William Cary, he was named to the NAIA Little All-American Team and was selected as a member of every All Tournament Team in which William Cary participated. He later played independent league basketball for 16 years and was named the MVP of the Picayune Independent Tournament in 1966.

While also coaching at MDCC, Coach Vickers was involved in numerous school associations and served as Vice-President and President of the college’s Alumni Association. He retired from coaching at the end of 1997-98 season.
