Lyle Bullard, Class of 1940

Lyle Bullard played on two of the most successful basketball teams at MDCC, then Sunflower Junior College. The Trojans went 34-2 Bullard’s freshman year when he played guard and 23-2 his sophomore year when he was the team’s center. The 1939-1940 team’s State Title was the fourth consecutive for the Trojans, while the Mississippi Valley Conference Title was the third consecutive. While at SJC, Bullard received All-State honors his freshman year and was voted All-Mississippi Valley Conference his sophomore year when he was team captain. He was a charter member of the college’s “S” Club in 1939.

Lyle Bullard went on to garner honors from Delta State College where he was named to the All-Southeastern Intercollegiate Assn. Team as a senior. He served in and played basketball with the Coast Guard from 1942-1946 and then played semi-pro ball with the Tupelo Legionnaires from 1947 to 1949 earning All-American honors as a forward his last year.

Following the war, Bullard returned to Northeast MS where he taught and coaches for 25 years until his untimely death in a car wreck in 1970 at the age of 53.
