George Hansen, Class of 1957

Induction Class of 2000

Much of George “Bulldog” Hansen’s life revolved around football, starting in junior high and continuing through college to a pro career that spanned eight years with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

The Canadian came to Mississippi to play football at Mississippi State but found himself at Jones Junior College when he didn’t make the cut. Jones had too many out of state players and SJC was able to take him. Hansen was offered a football scholarship for the next two years, but with stipulation that he would hold his scholarship only if he remained on the first or second team, which he did. During his first year at SJC the Trojans went 8-1 and finished second in the state. In 1956 the Trojans’ record was 5-4, but Hansen had an outstanding year at tack and was named an All American and played in the first All American game in Jackson where he was named MVP runner up.

George signed with the Georgia Bulldogs and continued to make a name for himself at tackle being voted Outstanding Lineman against Navy and again against Kentucky in 1957 and Florida in 1958. While at Georgia, Hansen earned a B.S. in Physical Education.

In 1959 Hansen signed with the Stampeders Football Club and for the next eight years played offensive tackle. In 1961 he was also called on to do the placekicking.

In 1967 Hansen retired from football and moved up to management in the Stampeders organization holding various positions including Minor Football Coordinator, Director of Player Personnel, Scout, and Assistant General Manager. During his time in management the Stampeders went to 3 Grey Cups in 1968, 1970, and 1970 finally winning it all 1971. For his accomplishment George “Bulldog” Hansen was named to the Stampeders prestigious Wall of Fame in 1999.

Following his football career Hansen worked for 13 years in various field including real estate and sale. He retired after 4 years as Assistant Administration Manager for Scimitar Oil Unlimited of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
