G.T. McClenahan

Induction Class of 1999

Coach “Mac” came to Sunflower Junior College in 1934 to coach boys’ and girls’ basketball and baseball and began producing championship teams almost immediately. In 1937 the Trojans baseball team captured the State Championship and the Mississippi Valley Conference Championship losing only one game during the entire season. In 1938 his boys’ basketball team captured both the State crown and the MVC title. In fact, Coach “Mac’s” boys would go on to win 4 consecutive State Titles in basketball and 3 straight MVC crowns. In 1939 his boys’ basketball team again won State and MVC titles giving Coach “Mac” a 3year record of 150 wins and only 29 losses. 1940 was a banner year for his basketball teams. The Trojans went 39-2 and added another State Title and MVC crown to their collection. They also went undefeated in conference play for the first time. One of the highlights of the season came in their first loss of the season when the Trojans were defeated 32-30 by the New York Celtics pro team. This was also the year that his Trojanettes won their first-ever State Championship and MVC Title going 17-0.

In Coach McClenahan’s final year, the Trojans made it to the State and MVC Tournament but were edged in both while the Trojanettes lost only three games. The final loss was by one point in the State Championship.
