Trojans Fall To Northwest Rangers

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans fell out of second place in the North Division Thursday night after losing 23-14 to the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers in Senatobia.

The Rangers unleashed a one man show in the guise of freshman running back Justin Crawford from Columbus, GA. The 6-0, 195 back accounted for 431 of the Rangers’ 443 total yards rushing 30 times for 257 yards and catching four [asses for another 174 yards. He also scored two of the Rangers’ three touchdowns.

The Trojans got the scoring started midway through the first quarter when Delta defensive back Cedric Poole gathered in a Northwest punt at his own 22 yard line and raced 78 yards for the TD. Zacarion Goodman’s PAT put MDCC ahead 7-0.

The Trojans opened the second with a punt attempt from their own 38 yard line but it seemed most of the Rangers’ punt rush was on punter Cody Lloyd about the time he got the snap back. Lloyd was swarmed at the 25 and never even attempted the punt. It took the Rangers three plays to score with Justin Crawford taking the ball the final 19 yards. The PAT tied the game at 7-7 with 14:53 left in the second quarter.

Northwest held MDCC on the ensuing drive and then proceeded to drive 94 yards in seven plays, one being an 82 yard pass play from Kyle Morgan to Justin Crawford, to score on a 24 yard field goal. This left the score 14-7 Northwest at the half.

The Rangers returned the kickoff to open the second half to their own 33. A fumble moved the ball back to the 29 and then Justin Crawford took the handoff and raced 71 yards for his second TD of the game. The PAT gave Northwest a 17-7 lead with 14:05 left in the third quarter.

The Trojans near the end of the period by mounting a 78 yard drive that took 14 plays. Roshard Burney scored from one yard out and the PAT pulled MDCC to within three, 14-17 at the close of the third quarter.

The teams exchanged punts before the Rangers hung their final points on the board on a one yard run by quarterback Kyle Morgan. This was set up, of course, by a 71 yard run compliments of Justin Crawford. The missed PAT made it 23-14.

The Trojans took the kickoff and drove to the Rangers’ 25 before a holding call and a an 11 yard sack of quarterback Devin Adams pushed Delta back to near mid field where they were forced to punt with 5:28 left in the game. The Rangers ran out the clock after that.

Statistically, Northwest rushed 41 times for 226 yards and hit 8-13 passes for 217 yards for a 443 yard total. Mississippi Delta rushed 38 times for 105 yards and Devin Adams completed 13 of 27 passes for 147 yards for a 252 yard total.

Roshard Burney was Delta’s leading ground gainer with 98 yards on 19 carries. Wide receiver Kameron Carter was the leading receiver with five receptions for 53 yards while Quadre Butler caught three passes for 24 yards and Derrick Jenkins had two catches for 21 yards. Cody Lloyd punted eight times for 312 yards and a 39 yard average.

The loss drops Mississippi Delta to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in North Division play while Northwest improves to 3-1 in the North and 3-4 overall.

The Trojans face a must-win game next Saturday as they host Itawamba Community College at 2:00 for Homecoming 2014 at Jim Randall stadium. The Indians are 3-2 in the North and 3-4 overall after defeating Northeast 38-19 this week.
