Irby played on the 1955 team that was invited to play in the first ever Mississippi Hospitality Bowl in Gulfport. He was named All-American and was inducted into the college “S” club while at Sunflower Junior College.
Irby received a scholarship from Mississippi State University and played 2 years with the bulldogs before being drafted by the Chicago Cardinals in 1958.
Irby returned to MS and in 1960 coached Lambert High School for one season in which he won the Cotton Bowl Conference and was named Coach of the Year.
Irby moved to Starkville where he became a businessman starting the Spot Cash Tire Store and in 1963 built WKOR Radio. In 1968 he began building apartments, to date, Irby Construction has built over 5,000 units mostly in AL and MS.
Irby has helped to develop the Pointe, a waterfront community on Lake Wilson in Florence AL and he has developed “A New Beginning”, a drug rehab center for women and has two “Cornerstone” drug rehab centers for men.
