Trojans Drop Two To Northeast
The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans dropped a pair of North Division games to the Northeast Community College Tigers at Moorhead Wednesday losing the first game 10-4 and the second game 5-2.
The Tigers jumped out to a four run lead in game one by scoring two runs in the second and two runs in the third inning but the Trojans tied the game with a four-run fourth inning helped along by a two-run homer by sophomore Colby Manor.
Northeast answered with two runs in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth and then held the Trojans scoreless through the final three innings. Freshman Ben Bolden took the loss on the mound for Delta going four complete and giving up five runs on three hits while striking out four and walking three batters.
Northeast scored 10 runs on seven hits with one error and left seven runners stranded on base while the Trojans collected just four runs on eight hits with two errors and left four runners on base.
Colby Manor went 2-3 at the plate with a single and a two-run homer. Peyton Callahan had an RBI single while Brandon Cummins, Jacob Shempert, Carson Crites, Jason Berry and Michael Beloso all had a hit each.
The Tigers again took a big lead in game two scoring two runs in the first and two runs in the second inning. The Trojans answered with a single run in the bottom of the second another run in the third but were unable to produce any more runs despite loading the bases in sixth with two outs. Northeast added an insurance run in the seventh.
Freshman Paul Carpenter took the loss for MDCC going four complete giving up four runs on six hits while striking out five batters and walking just one. Jason Berry led the Trojans at the plate with a solo homerun while Danny Springer had an RBI double. The other Delta hits came from Michael Beloso and Tyler Mize.
The losses drop the Trojans overall record to 16-10 and their North Division record to 7-3 which is still good enough for first place in the division.
In other baseball news, freshman third baseman Carson Crites, who was named the Baseball Player of the Week in Mississippi last week, also received Baseball Player of the Week honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association Wednesday. Crites, a freshman from Amarillo, TX, led the Trojans to a 4-0 week vs No. 13 Northwest MS CC and Itawamba CC. He hit .667 on the week during 12 at-bats with eight hits, two doubles, one homerun, six RBIs, six runs scored, two walks and one stolen base.
The Trojans will be on the road Saturday for a double header with North Division foe Holmes Community College in Goodman. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
