MDCC Adult Education Student Spotlight – Yolunda Kelly
MOORHEAD, Miss. (Oct., 3 2023) – Yolunda Kelly's life took an unexpected turn when
she dropped out of high school in the 11th grade after discovering she was pregnant
with her son. However, through determination, perseverance, and the support of Mississippi
Delta Community College's (MDCC) Adult Education program, Yolunda is now on a path
to success as an aspiring Pharmacy Technician.
Yolunda's journey began in Florida, where she made the difficult decision to leave high school to focus on raising her child. In search of opportunities and a better future, she moved back to Mississippi to be with her mother. It was during this period that Yolunda discovered the MDCC Adult Education program, offered through the Greenville WIN Job Center.
Through the program's comprehensive services, Yolunda was able to achieve significant milestones in her education and career journey. She earned her high school equivalency (HSE) diploma by successfully completing the GED test and a National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC). These accomplishments not only marked the completion of her basic education but also opened doors to higher education.
Yolunda seized the opportunity and enrolled in MDCC's Pharmacy Technician program, which is part of the Mississippi Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (MIBEST) initiative. MIBEST is a workforce and economic development program designed to empower underserved individuals and help them transition into careers with family-sustaining wages.
Kelly's determination and dedication are evident as she pursues her educational and career goals. Her current focus is on completing her Pharmacy Technician program at the Capps Center in Indianola. Her ambition is to secure employment as a pharmacy technician in a hospital setting upon graduation.
For those inspired by Yolunda's story or who find themselves in similar circumstances, MDCC's Adult Education program is here to help. Registration for the program will be available from October 9th to 12th at various sites: the Greenville Higher Education Center, the Greenville WIN Job Center, the Moorhead Campus, and the Greenwood Center (204 E Church Street).
Yolunda Kelly's journey from leaving high school to becoming a determined student pursuing a career as a Pharmacy Technician is a testament to the life-changing impact of education and support. Her story serves as an inspiration to others facing challenges in pursuit of their dreams.
