MDCC to receive $1.4 million in ‘student stimulus’ CARES funds

CARES Act

Mississippi Delta Community College will receive nearly $1.4 million from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The funds will come through the U.S. Department of Education to assist qualifying students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The available monies will go directly to current qualifying MDCC students.

The “student stimulus” money comes via the $14 billion Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund portion of the $2 trillion CARES Act. MDCC students are part of the nationwide pool of postsecondary education students and institutions that are all supported by the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund.

“MDCC is very grateful for this federal funding that will be extremely helpful to many of our students whose on-campus education was suddenly disrupted,” said Dr. Tyrone Jackson, President of MDCC. “Our staff is currently working out the details for the process of informing students and determining how to get the ‘student stimulus’ money in their hands. We strongly encourage every student who qualifies to monitor the college website for more details as they become available.”

MDCC has also completed the CARES Act/Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund paperwork to receive a second, similar payment from the U.S. Department of Education for institutional COVID-19 related needs.

“We also are looking to receive additional funds for new student support programs,” said D. Reed Abraham, Associate Vice President for Advancement & Public Relations. “We will continue serving and supporting our students in every way possible.”

The CARES Act was signed into law on March 27, 2020, and is the third and largest major legislative initiative to address COVID-19. More information will become available and accessible soon via the college website at www.msdelta.edu.
