Christopher Lee Named New Adult Education Director

chris-leeMOORHEAD, Miss. (June 30, 2021) – Mississippi Delta Community College’s (MDCC) Adult Education (AE) program has a new director with a familiar face in Christopher Lee.

Lee has been an AE instructor at MDCC’s Greenwood Center since 2015 and was initially attracted to the program due to a desire to better his community.

“Initially, what drew me to adult education was the need for a quality adult education/GED program in my particular area in Greenwood. Coming from the public-school sector, I knew that a lot of students, a lot of individuals in general, didn’t have a high school diploma,” said Lee. “I felt like, ‘okay, I can come in and make an immediate impact in my community. Not just for MDCC but for Greenwood, MS… for my immediate community.”

Lee explained that his personal philosophy on education is to teach the “whole student.” He feels that far too many students are being taught to take a test, ultimately driving students away from traditional education environments. Instead, he hopes that MDCC’s AE program will continue to provide productive members of society.

“So many times, in the past couple of years, teachers have been conditioned to ‘teach to the test’ and to ‘teach to fill in the bubble’ or ‘teach to click something.’ For too long, we’ve gotten away from teaching the whole student. What I mean by teaching the whole student is making sure that we’re not only preparing students to pass a test but preparing them to be contributing members of society; a well-rounded student who can contribute to the local economy,” said Lee.

While he hopes to impart his philosophy into MDCC’s AE program, he doesn’t plan to make many changes due to how successful the current program already is.

“We have a good foundation that’s already laid. It’s like a bicycle that’s already in working order. The tires are good, the air is good, the spokes are good, and you know if it’s rolling good, you don’t want to mess with it too much. Every now and then, you need a little air, little tune-up here and there, a little grease on the spokes or wheels but not major changes,” Lee explained.

“My main thing is accountability to make sure our instructors are giving good high-quality instruction, which is what we’ve been doing the last couple of years. We want to maintain that high status as one of the best adult education programs in the country. So, no major changes, just making sure that our instructors give 100% effort and are giving good, high-quality instruction because they are, in fact, the best in the state.”

Lee concluded by explaining he’s excited to continue his career at MDCC and looks forward to being a part of the MDCC family for as long as the school will have him.

The MDCC Adult Education program will hold registration for new students July 5-7 on the Moorhead Campus, the Greenville Higher Education Center and the MDCC Greenwood Center. Classes are free, and registration begins promptly at 8:15 a.m. For more information, contact the MDCC AE department at 662-246-6516.
