MDCC Honors Scholars

MOORHEAD, Miss. (May 3, 2022) – Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) recognized its scholars on April 27 during its annual Honors Day Ceremony. MDCC Vice President of Instruction Teresa Webster welcomed those in attendance and informed them that the event was a special day set aside to honor students for their academic excellence.

Webster explained that two categories of awards would be given out throughout the ceremony. Achievement awards are given for excellence in a particular discipline, whereas departmental awards are the highest honor bestowed upon a student by a specific department.

Dean of Student Services Derrick Fields then led the attendees in an invocation and pledge of allegiance following the posting of the colors by Assistant Chief of Police Clifton King and Patrolman Percy Pennington.

MDCC President Dr. Tyrone Jackson then took to the podium to issue words of encouragement to the honorees. He began his speech by saying, “Achieving academic success requires tenacity, willpower, determination and passion. This are attributes that you all possess and qualities that you will carry on to the next level.”

Before awards were presented, Director of Choral Activities Harvey Jackson led the MDCC Choir in a rendition of, “We Shall Overcome” with a special solo by Joseph Smith, an MDCC student.

Fa’Darryl Cooper, Emily Fike, Sarah Hill, Mary Lofton and Ja’Nyia Turner and were recognized as members of the 2022 MDCC Hall of Fame. In order to be eligible for this honor, the students must be sophomores with a scholastic average of 3.5 or better while being in school for at least three consecutive semesters. They must also have rendered service and contributions to the college and possess qualities of leadership, loyalty, character, overall excellent college citizenship and potential community leadership.

Following the Hall of Fame announcement, the department chairs and organization sponsors presented students with achievement and departmental awards for their accomplishments throughout the academic year.

Jackson concluded the ceremony by recognizing faculty and staff who had received honors and awards throughout the past year.
