MDCC Honors Scholars

MOORHEAD, Miss. (May 5, 2025) – Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) recognized its scholars on May 1st during its annual Honors Day Ceremony. MDCC Vice President of Instruction/Provost Dr. Valarie Morgan welcomed those in attendance and informed them that the event was a special day set aside to honor students for their academic excellence.
Morgan welcomed everyone to the ceremony before MDCC Police Officers Adrian Gooden and Accacia Gregory posted the colors.
Phi Theta Kappa and Future Business Leaders of America Club President Caleb Johnson then led the attendees in an invocation, pledge of allegiance, and recognition of special guests, including veterans, law enforcement, and first responders.
An introduction was then offered by Morgan, who explained that two categories of awards would be given out throughout the ceremony. Achievement awards are given for excellence in a particular discipline, whereas departmental awards are the highest honor bestowed upon a student by a specific department.
MDCC President Dr. Steven Jones then took to the podium to issue words of encouragement to the honorees before Director of Choral Activities Harvey Jackson led the MDCC Choir in a rendition of "Tshotsholoza" arranged by Jeffrey Ames.
Karle Aldridge, Caleb Johnson and Parker Lovett were recognized as members of the 2025 MDCC Hall of Fame. In order to be eligible for this honor, the students must be sophomores with a scholastic average of 3.5 or better while being in school for at least three consecutive semesters. In addition, they must also have rendered service and contributions to the College and possess qualities of leadership, loyalty, character, overall excellent college citizenship, and potential community leadership.
Following the Hall of Fame announcement, the department chairs and organization sponsors presented students with achievement and departmental awards for their accomplishments throughout the academic year.
Morgan recognized faculty and staff who had received honors and awards throughout the past school year, and Jones honored the College's retirees. The ceremony ended with a surprise celebration as the MDCC Choir sang a round of "Happy Birthday" to Humanities Department Chair Claire Green.
