MDCC Embarks on New Strategic Plan with Mission Statement Revision

Moorhead, Miss. (May 9, 2024) - After “gearing up for success” during the pandemic years, MDCC has begun shaping its future trajectory by revising its mission statement and institutional goals. This action marks the first step in crafting a comprehensive strategic plan for the next five years. Recognizing the need to align its mission and goals with evolving educational and community needs, the College took a multistep approach, engaging stakeholders from every service area within its community.

MDCC demonstrates institutional integrity by publishing a clearly defined and comprehensive mission statement that is specific to the college and addresses teaching, learning, and public service. By revising it, MDCC fortifies its legacy of quality, innovation, and inclusion, while addressing contemporary challenges and opportunities. The revision process is not merely about language refinement but also signifies a collective introspection that ensures the mission and goals resonate with the aims and standards of all stakeholders across time.

In February 2024, Dr. Tyrone Jackson called together the Mission Statement Review Committee, a panel of 12 people representing faculty, staff, students, alumni, trustees, and community partners. During the meeting, members reviewed the existing mission statement and institutional goals. They also read the narrative about them in the 2018 Compliance Certification for our institutional accreditor, SACSCOC. Dr. Jackson then opened the floor for discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of the wording, which is nearly a decade old. Dr. Kate Failing from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness collected and summarized that feedback, which was sent back to the group as the basis for revisions. The committee reconvened in March and drafted a revised version of the mission statement and institutional goals, which were approved by the Board of Trustees at their meeting held on April 11, 2024.

Each person’s contribution and each step of the process have enriched the dialogue, fostering a sense of ownership and collective responsibility towards the institution's mission and future trajectory. Dr. Jackson, President of MDCC, expressed enthusiasm about this pivotal undertaking, stating, "Our mission statement revision marks a transformative juncture in our institutional journey. By engaging stakeholders from all divisions, we ensure that our mission reflects our shared values and aspirations, driving us towards a future of excellence and societal impact."

The strategic planning process will continue to unfold under the guidance of a dedicated task force comprising representatives from various constituencies, ensuring comprehensive representation and expertise. As the college reimagines its future, it reaffirms its commitment to fostering an environment that nurtures intellectual curiosity, fosters innovation, and cultivates responsible citizens for the Delta and the wider world. MDCC invites its stakeholders and the broader community to stay tuned for further updates as it deploys its revitalized mission statement in its continued pursuit of academic excellence and societal relevance.
