Behavioral Intervention Team
What is the BIT?
The Mississippi Delta Community College Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is responsible for addressing student behavioral concerns that disrupt the learning environment or campus community. These concerns may include, but are not limited to, threats, unusual or erratic behavior, acts or threats of violence, and repeated expressions of suicidal intent or threats toward others.
The BIT provides recommendations to the Office of the Dean of Student Services regarding a student’s continued enrollment or eligibility to reside in campus housing. While the team plays a vital role in promoting campus safety, it does not interfere with the responsibilities of other departments that are charged with upholding college policy or enforcing the law. The BIT also plays a key role in reviewing and developing college procedures related to student behavior and safety concerns.
Goals
- To intervene early and provide support and behavioral response to students displaying varying levels of disruptive, disturbed, distressed and/or dangerous behaviors;
- To respond with support first and student conduct actions as a last resort;
- To balance FERPA, HIPAA and counselor privilege with the college’s need-to-know and emergency communication needs;
- To promote holistic care; and
- To be a resource for students, faculty, administrators and staff.
How does the BIT team work?
Anyone concerned about a specific student behavior that could be deemed disruptive or a possible threat to self or others should complete the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) Referral Form located at the bottom of this page. The BIT reviews all reports and determines appropriate action in a timely manner.
Confidentiality is a high priority, and the BIT will balance an individual’s right
to privacy with the college’s duty to respond to individuals in high-risk situations.
If there is an immediate threat to you or others, contact MDCC Campus Police at 662-581-3965
or call 911 immediately.
