Program Overview
The Advanced Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares students with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to collect blood specimens for laboratory testing used in patient diagnosis and treatment. In this one-semester program, students are trained in venipuncture, capillary puncture, and CPR, while also gaining experience in performing waived and point-of-care testing procedures commonly used in healthcare settings.
This evening course is ideal for health professionals seeking to expand their current skills, for currently employed Phlebotomists seeking certification, or for those interested in a profession in laboratory medicine. Other topics covered include medical terminology, laboratory safety, basic anatomy and physiology, quality assurance methods, and medicolegal issues of phlebotomy.
The clinical practicum is provided at regional medical affiliates, allowing participants to achieve proficiency in the health-care setting. Students must complete a minimum number of successful unaided collections before course completion. The practicum is not required for students who have been employed as Phlebotomists for at least six months within the past five years, as documented by letter from their employer.
Affiliated health care organizations are Delta Health-The Medical Center in Greenville, Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Greenwood, University of MS Medical Center Grenada in Grenada, Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale, Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland, Tallahatchie General Hospital in Charleston, Baptist Memorial Hospital in Yazoo City, and Chicot Memorial Hospital in Lake Village, AR. Clinical assignments are at the discretion of the college.
A certificate of completion will be awarded to those who satisfactorily complete the Advanced Phlebotomy Technician curriculum. Upon completion, students take a national examination to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician.
Professional Licensure/Certification
Currently there is no Mississippi State licensure/certification requirement for Phlebotomy. However, MDCC's Advanced Phlebotomy Technician program is a program that meets the educational requirements for Phlebotomy Technician certification and qualifies completers of the program to take a national certification examination. The MDCC Advanced Phlebotomy Technician program has not made a determination on whether the certification meets the state educational requirement for other US States, Territories, or the District of Columbia.
Licensure and certification requirements are established by agencies that are independent of and not affiliated with Mississippi Delta community College. Phlebotomy certification and licensure varies state by state, and state laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time. Currently only four states require a phlebotomy license: California, Washington, Nevada, and Louisiana. Mississippi Delta Community College does not guarantee nor can it confirm that programs that fulfill Mississippi licensure/certification requirements will satisfy the criteria of professional licensure boards in other states or territories. Students planning to seek employment in another state or U.S. territory after completing the program should contact the appropriate licensing board for current requirements.
